Ganajagaran Mancha yesterday submitted a note of protest to the home ministry, demanding action against the responsible police officials for attacking its activists during demonstrations in Gulshan last week.
The platform submitted a separate memorandum to the foreign ministry, requesting the government to suspend diplomatic relations with Pakistan.
A team led by spokesperson Imran H Sarker submitted the protest notes to Additional Home Secretary Mainuddin Khandker and Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali at their offices.
Imran told reporters: “The additional secretary has assured us that the matter will be conveyed to the higher authorities and legal action will be taken accordingly at the shortest possible time.”
After the execution of death sentence against war criminal Abdul Quader Molla, the National Assembly of Pakistan on December 16 adopted a resolution, proposed by a Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker, expressing concern. Earlier the Pakistan home minister criticised the execution.
In protest against the resolution, the platform on December 18 and 19 tried to besiege the Pakistan High Commission at Gulshan in the capital.
“We were observing our programme as per law,” Imran said alleging that the police obstructed the peaceful programme “without any reason,” and charged batons on the activists. They also hurled abusive towards a Hindu woman and assaulted her.
“We have already disclosed to the media about the seven-day ultimatum for taking action against the policemen who assaulted the protesters,” he said adding that they would go for tougher programmes if no action was taken.
He also urged the people to boycott Pakistani commodities as a protest.
Imran also expressed concern over the rising incidents of attacks on its activists in the capital and other places of the country.
The Mancha, a platform of youths, in February waged a historic movement at Shahbagh demanding capital punishment for all war criminals and a ban on Jamaat-e-Islami’s politics.
