‘AL to reinstate ’72 constitution next time’

Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam on Saturday said the party would reinstate the constitution of 1972 if it comes to power next time.

The AL leader made the statement while addressing a discussion at the capital this afternoon.

“We have upheld democracy by amending the constitution. We will go back to the constitution of 1972 if we come into power again,” said Ashraf.

He added, “The Awami League does not fear its local and international enemies.”

Criticising foreign countries who expressed concern over Quader Molla’s execution, he said: “When Saddam Hossain was hanged, Osama Bin Laden and Gaddafi were killed, then where they [these countries] were?”

Ashraf said, “We have achieved independence; no one has donated it to us.”

“Some newspapers are writing news based on their imagination. If it continues, people will lose confidence on the media,” he claimed.
