Awami League strips Awlad off party responsibilities

The ruling Awami League yesterday expelled a primary member of the party for violating party decisions.

Dr Awlad Hossain, a primary member and former assistant personal secretary to party chief Sheikh Hasina when she was the opposition leader of the eighth parliament, was expelled after he decided to contest in the upcoming elections from Dhaka 4 independently.

A press release signed by Awami League Office Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap said Awlad had involved himself in anti-organisational activities by violating the party’s decision and for this he was exempted from all his designations, including party’s primary membership.

The press release also prohibited its ward level activists of Dhaka 4 from cooperating with him and warned of taking punitive actions.

Talking to the Dhaka Tribune, Awlad said: “It is a party decision and everybody has to follow it.

“But my election symbol is not the boat anymore. I decided to contest as an independent candidate at the requests of local people,” he added.
