AL leader’s tendons cut off in Jhenaidah

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami are said to have severed the tendons of a local Awami League leader in Kotchandpur upazila, Jhenaidah on Wednesday morning.

They were also said to have stabbed the driver of a three wheeler in Jhenaidah Sadar in the morning during the BNP-led 18-party alliance's nationwide blockade.

The tendons in the legs of Awami League ward president of Kotchandpur, Rafiqul Islam Mondal, 32, was severed, police said.

Kotchandpur police Officer-in-Charge Shahahan Ali blamed Jamaat supporters for the act.

A driver of a three wheeler was stabbed on Kaliganj-Chuadanga highway in Lautala area, Kaliganj police said. However, an identity could not be obtained.

About a 100 pickets laid down and blocked Jhenaidah-Jessore highway near Keyabagan area of Jhenaidah Sadar, Kaliganj police OC Manir Uddin Mollah said.

Police tried to disperse the picketers and opened 10 to 12 fire and threw tear shells.

Moheshpur police station officer in charge Shahahan Ali had admitted the incident.

Officer in charge of Kaliganj police station Manir Uddin Mollah said, the pickets had blocked Lautala putting logs of trees on Jhenaidah-Jessore highway. Above 100 people had lied down on the roads near Keyabagan area in Jhenaidah sadar upazila to block the road.

The pickets had damaged the motorbike of Nayadiganta correspondent Abdus Selim in Moheshpur.
