Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad informed visiting UN envoy Oscar Fernandez-Taranco that anything could be made possible if the political parties reached a consensus as per relevant legal provisions.
He said: " Anything can be done if all the political parties reach a negotiation as per relevant legal provisions."
The CEC made the remarks in reply to Taranco’s query whether the commission could extend the time of holding the polls. He briefed the media about the meeting at the Election Commission secretariat after the meeting.
“The situation got further complicated as the political parties could not reach a consensus,” he said.
The meeting began around 11am and lasted for about one and half more hours, Dhaka Tribune correspondent Mohammad Zakaria reported.
However, Taranco left the commission without speaking to journalists.
Earlier on Saturday, Taranco met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and asked if the elections can be deferred.
He is said to have supported elections in line with the constitution and observed the need for a level-playing field for all parties concerned.
