7 Shibir men held, CNG torched in Dhaka

At least seven Islami Chhatra Shibir activists were detained in Dhaka for violence Saturday morning, the day a fresh spell of the opposition blockade began.

A CNG-driven auto-rickshaw was set on fire and vandalised several vehicles in Shahjahanpur area.

Shibir, the student affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami, brought out processions in several areas of the capital, reports that came in said.

BNP supporters locked in clashes with law enforcers in Bhashantek area. Law enforcers said they were compelled to fire rubber bullets at scene.

Identities of the detainees could not be obtained in preliminary reports.

Four Shibir supporters were caught red-handed with four crude bombs in Rampura around 7:30am, police said. A banner was seized from them.

They brought out a procession in Bansree area, Rampura police Officer-in-Charge Kripasindhu Bala said. Police chased and caught them.

Witnesses said Shibir supporters brought out another flash procession near Rampura bridge and blasted crude bombs before fleeing the area at around 6am.

A shibir man was detained in Gabtoli during an attempt to blast crude bombs, Darussalam police said.

A Shibir procession was reported from Sipahibagh, Khilgaon area. However, they said to have fled seeing police. No one could be detained from there.

Wtinesses said Jubo Dal activists set a CNG auto-rickshaw on fire and vandalised several vehicles from a procession in Shahjahanpur around 9am.

Some crude bombs were blasted at scene before the blockaders fled. Locals doused the flames on the vehicle soon. No injuries were reported.

Shahjahanpur police OC Zakir Hossain endorsed the facts, but could not specify the identity of the blockade supporters.

Two Shibir cadres were detained on an attempt to assault police in Islampur area, Kotwali police OC Mohammad Shah Alam said.

BNP supporters and law enforcers were in a tense stand-off in Bhashantek area around 8:30am, Bhashantek police OC Abul Hossain said.

Police were compelled to fire several rounds of rubber bullets to tame situation, he added.

This fresh spell of shutdown was called by incumbent BNP spokesperson Salauddin Ahmed with most of the party’s top leaders in jail.

The entire of last week, save the public holiday of Friday, was spent in blockade called demanding national elections in line with demand of BNP.

The main opposition demands a neutral body to oversee the upcoming national elections that has been slated for January 5.

About a hundred lives have already been lost with scores others injured in the violence arising between the polls-disparity between two main political parties.
