JP: Delay polls, ensure all parties’ participation

Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad on Friday said his party would join the elections if it is delayed by 10 days and the participation of all parties is ensured.

The former president of the country made the statement while speaking to journalists in front of his Baridhara residence in the evening.

He said three ministers of his party met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday and urged her for to extend the election day for 10 days.

“Jatiya Party will join elections if the deadline is extended and all parties join,” he added.

He repeated several times his stance on not joining the upcoming elections without the participation of all political parties.

“I will not change my decision further on Jatiya Party’s stance on elections,” said Ershad.

Asked about Anisul Islam Mahmud, Zaiuddin Bablu and Rowshan Ershad, he said they would submit their resignation letters.

On Thursday, four ministers of Jatiya Party in the polls-time all-party government have handed their resignation letters over to party chief HM Ershad. 

The ministers are GM Quader, commerce minister, ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, civil aviation and tourism minister, Mujibul Haq Chunnu, state minister for youth and sports and Salma Islam, state minister for women and children affairs.

Jatiya Party secretary general Ruhul Amin Howlader at a press conference on Thursday said Ershad would hand over the resignation letters to President Abdul Hamid on Friday.
