A Dhaka court yesterday rejected the bail petition of detained BNP Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and sent him to jail.
Earlier, around 10am police produced Rizvi before the court with a 10-day remand prayer to quiz the BNP leader in a vehicle torching case. The court rejected the remand prayer. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate MA Salam passed the orders after hearing both the petitions.
It told Investigating Officer MA Jalil, also officer-in-charge of the Shahbagh Police Station, to interrogate Rizvi at the Jail Gate regarding the arson case.
The magistrate also said as Rizvi is an honourable person and indisposed the IO could question him at the jail gate, if needed, for ten days. Defence counsel Md Sanaullah Miah filed the bail petition along with the remand rejection petition to the court.
The case was filed on November 29 with the Shahbagh Police Station against 17 senior BNP leaders for setting a running bus on fire in the capital on Thursday evening. Three, amongst the 19 burn victims of the incident, have died. The accused in the case include BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Amanullah Aman, Sadeque Hossain Khoka, Mirza Abbas, Barkatullah Bulu and Goyeshwar Chandra Roy.
On Saturday, detectives arrested Rizvi from BNP Nayapaltan office in the capital two days after 19 people suffered burn injuries when miscreants set fire to a bus at Shahbagh.
Earlier on Saturday, police raided BNP’s Nayapaltan headquarters in the capital and arrested Rizvi.
He had been staying at the headquarters for the past few months before police detained him.
