Hasina’s emergency meeting at afternoon

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina will sit with her top party leaders at an emergency meeting in her Ganabhaban residence Wednesday afternoon.

The 4pm meeting, will be in view of Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad’s “no” to elections amidst the on-going agitation of 18-party alliance.

Details of the meeting could not be known, but a top-level meeting was held late Tuesday night before the central committee meeting was called.

Jatiya Party leader and Minister for Water Resources Anisul Islam Mahmud was among those who attended the meeting.

“It was not an official meeting. PM called us because of the sudden declaration of Ershad. We clarified that it was not a unanimous decision,” he told the Dhaka Tribune.

It was his (Ershad) personal decision to boycott the polls, he added. “We support elections and will try to convince our chairman of the same.”

Minister Hasan Mahmud told the Dhaka Tribune that the Jatiya Party members who attended the Tuesday-night meeting were for polls.

“Elections will take place at the right time. Those who submitted nomination will contest the polls,” Awami League joint Secretary Mahbubul Haq Hanif said.

Suranjit Sen Gupta, who attended the meeting, told Dhaka tribune government expects election to hold elections at the stipulated time. “AL also desires it.”

Among others present in the meeting were Amir Hossain Amu, Tofail Ahmed, Obaidul Quader, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Rashed Khan Menon, Hasanul Haq Inu and Anwar Hossain Manju.
