The BNP on Sunday branded the polls-time government ‘illegal’, alleging that the government is in violation of the constitution and was` still taking policy-making decisions like signing treaties.
“The Awami league-led alliance government has no moral right to govern the country. It has announced the election schedule illegally,” Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a press release.
Asking the election commission to postpone the election schedule, Fakhrul urged the commission to take the necessary steps to hold an inclusive and meaningful election.
“Otherwise people of Bangladesh will not accept any stage-managed election. People will ensure their voting and democratic rights through movement,” he said.
The spokesperson of the party alleged that the government was obstructing their peaceful democratic movement.
“Our party office is cordoned off. Under such an undemocratic situation, there is no scope for holding any election. Awami League is doing so to cling to power forever.”
Fakhrul claimed that the whole nation had been pushed into a deep crisis through the announcement of the election schedule, ignoring the people’s demand for election under a non-partisan government.
“The nation has voiced its protest against the government’s undemocratic decision. As people are sacrificing their lives for their democratic rights…law enforcers and Awami League’s armed cadres are resorting to murder, repression and arrests to stop the movement.”
Earlier, BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed issued a video message, in which he urged the prime minister to step down from the office with honour.
“Repression, killing and false cases will intensify the movement,” said Salahuddin, “Still there is time, withdraw false cases, release the arrested leaders and activists, and accept the demand for an election under a non-partisan government.”
