Options open for polls-reschedule, hints CEC

Scope for a change in the election schedule is open if the two main political parties can reach consensus, Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad hinted Tuesday.

In reply to questions on whether the polls-schedule can be altered upon a consensus, the CEC said: “all options are open if the parties can reach a consensus.”

He was speaking to journalists at the Election Commission secretariat Tuesday afternoon.

The statement was made a day after the polls-schedule was announced amidst dissapproval from the main opposition BNP.

Hours after the elections were slated for January 5 in a speech to the nation Monday, BNP called a nationwide 48-hour blockade.

They had warned of “paralysing” the country if polls-schedule is announced out of line with their demand.
