Jamaat’s hartal on in Chittagong

A dawn-to-dusk hartal, called by Jamaat-e-Islami in protest at the deaths of two of its members, was underway on Sunday in the port city.

The hartal supporters torched two CNG-run auto rickshaws in the Sholoshohor area at around 9am.

Shah Mohammad Abdur Rauf, assistant commissioner of Panchlaish zone of CMP, confirmed this to the Dhaka Tribune.

The Shibir activists came out in a brisk procession in the area and set two auto rickshaws on fire.

None was injured in the incident.

The hartal activists exploded around 15 crude bombs in different areas of the city in the morning.

Additional law enforcers were deployed at key points in the port city.

Vehicular movement was thin in the city. No long-route buses were seen to enter or leave the city.

However, the ongoing primary terminal examinations have been kept out of the purview of the shutdown.

Earlier on Saturday, Jamaat-e-Islami called a day long hartal in the district protesting the killing of a leader and an activist in Sitakundu and Mirsarai upazilas.

However, students of the Primary School Certificate and mardasa equivalent Ebtedayee Final Examinations will be excluded from the hartal.

Earlier police recovered the bullet-riddled body of Jamaat’s Barab Kunda union Unit General Sectary Aminul Islam from the city’s Shekerpara on Wednesday, while activist Jashim’s body was recovered early Saturday.
