Babunagari: Ershad blessed with a curse

Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh Secretary General Zunaid Babunagari yesterday stated that Jatiya Party Chairman HM Ershad had not received a blessing from the group’s chief, Shah Ahmad Shafi, rather a “curse.”

He made the remarks in a press statement yesterday evening, six days after the former military dictator met the Hefazat chief in Chittagong. He went to the port city a day after announcing he was leaving the ruling alliance to form a new one.

Babunagari said though Ershad had taken blessings from Shafi, but his current political stance would turn it into a “curse” for him. He said the Hefazat chief gave his blessing for the ones who worked for Islam.

He said Ershad had been clever and his support towards the Hefazat rallies and demonstrations were only “gimmick.” The Hefazat leader said his recent favour for Islam was only to come back to power.

“Though the Jatiya Party chief shows concerns for the Muslims of the country, his current actions hint his stance against Islam,” Babunagari said adding that Ershad had been using Islam as a mode of power since the beginning of his regime.

Ershad talks about Islam and its welfare “but in his personal life he has nothing to do with religion.”

The Hefazat leader claimed that Ershad had been “deceiving” both the religious scholars and the people with his talks on Islam.

Claiming that Ershad only changed sides to stay in power, Babunagari said: “Ershad will not escape the consequences of betraying the people’s trust.”
