'BNP not to join polls under Hasina-led govt'

Main opposition BNP will not participate in the polls until the incumbent government forms a non-party government by demolishing the all-party cabinet, said the party’s acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

He made the statement while attending the birthday celebration of BNP Senior Vice Chairman Tarique Rahman in the city on Wednesday.

He said: “We want to make it clear that the BNP will not join the national polls under the newly formed all-party cabinet led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.”

Indicating the premier, Fakhrul said: “The opposition party will not join the polls if you head the polls-time cabinet.

BNP will not let you hold the election in such a way with the help of your devoted election commission,” he added.

Addressing the leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, he said: “The ongoing movement will not be boosted only by vandalizing a few vehicles. You have to come out on the streets in thousands and stage a tougher demonstration.”
