The hearing of bail pleas by five BNP leaders who were detained in the capital on November 8 will be held on Thursday.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge Md Jahrul Haque fixed the date on Monday after defence lawyer Sanaullah Miah filed petitions on behalf of his clients, seeking bail in two separate cases.
The detained opposition leaders include BNP standing committee members Moudud Ahmed, MK Anwar and Rafiqul Islam Miah, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s adviser Abdul Awal Mintoo, and her special assistant Shimul Biswas.
On the evening of November 8, Moudud, Anwar and Rafiqul were picked up in front of Hotel Sonargaon, while Mintoo and Shimul were arrested outside Khaleda’s Gulshan residence a few hours later.
The detained leaders were later shown arrested in two cases of vandalism, arson and attacking police in the capital during opposition-called hartals. The cases were filed with Motijheel police station on November 5 and September 24.
On November 9, a Dhaka court placed the five detainees on eight days’ remand after police produced them before the court.
On Sunday, the High Court stayed the lower court’s remand order and directed the authorities to send the suspects to jail immediately.
One of the detainees, Shimul Biswas, is now in Dhaka Central Jail, while four others are at Kashimpur jail in Gazipur, said lawyer Tahirul Islam Touhid, an associate of Moudud.
