Water Resources Minister and BNP Joint Secretary General Md Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee on Saturday said the opposition’s long march poses a threat to democracy.
“Opposition's long march is a threat to democracy,” he said while speaking at a programme as the chief guest at the Town Hall auditorium in Lakshmipur town Saturday afternoon.
About the opposition’s long march slogans, the BNP leader said it was appropriate against Sheikh Hasina and her fascist government, but is not justified against a government that has been in office for only six months.
Referring to the remarks of the Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer in the National Parliament , Anee said the problems concerning fuel, gas and electricity were not new one but had persisted for a long time.
“These problems must be resolved collectively. Then why another long march on the streets?” he questioned.
The minister said rebuilding the country is not possible by any single party alone while both the ruling and opposition parties would have to work together to build the country anew.
“The government must be given the opportunity to work . . . Only then it would be possible to reconstruct the country,” he added.
“Everyone must remember that this is not a fascist government, nor is it an opposition sponsored by a fascist government . . . we have all come through elections,” he said.
The minister urged all concerned to remain vigilant so that fascism could not return because of the opposition’s overall activities.
Bangladesh Football Federation Vice-President Wahid Uddin Chowdhury Happy, Professor Nani Gopal Ghosh, Prof Md Yousuf, BNP leader Abul Hasem, Jamaat leader Maulana Faruk Hossain Noor Nabi and Mohammad Abdullah, among others, were present there.
