Prime Minister Tarique Rahman today congratulated newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir with red roses after he was declared the 23rd president of Bangladesh.
Immediately after Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin announced the result in the National Parliament chamber this afternoon, the prime minister shook hands with Mirza Fakhrul and presented him with a red rose.
Lawmakers congratulated him by thumping their desks, while he acknowledged them by raising his hand.
As opposition lawmakers, including Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman and Deputy Opposition Leader Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher, approached the treasury bench, Mirza Fakhrul stepped forward and embraced Shafiqur Rahman.
Later, Tarique Rahman embraced Mirza Fakhrul and exchanged greetings with lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches. He also exchanged greetings with Shafiqur Rahman.
Mirza Fakhrul then shook hands with the chief election commissioner and greeted other election officials, creating a festive atmosphere in the chamber.
Voting in the presidential election was held from 2pm to 5pm, followed by vote counting at 5:02pm.
Agents of the two candidates, Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni, Opposition Chief Whip and National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam, and Whips Mia Nuruddin Ahmed Apu and Rakibul Islam Bakul were present during the counting.
