Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday said the Awami League lacks the capability to carry out any sabotage surrounding August 5, which will be observed as July Mass Uprising Day.
"I don't think the Awami League has the capacity to do such things. It is a banned organization and a mafia force. Occasionally they make attempts to attract attention from abroad, but beyond that I do not see any significant activity," he told reporters at the Secretariat.
Asked whether intelligence reports had prompted authorities to instruct police to remain on high alert, the minister said the directives were part of routine security measures rather than a response to any specific threat.
"This is standard practice within the police force. Officers are instructed not to leave official vehicles unattended, not to have all team members leave their posts at the same time, and to ensure that at least one officer remains with official vehicles. These are routine precautionary measures and should not be interpreted otherwise," he said.
Responding to a question about the election of a new president, Salahuddin Ahmed said the matter falls under the jurisdiction of the Election Commission.
Asked about programs marking August 5, he said a meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday under his party's leadership, bringing together allies of the joint movement and representatives of other political parties at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh.
He added that the prime minister is expected to attend the event, where the government's plans for observing the day will be announced.
