Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expelled its Satkhira-4 lawmaker, Gazi Nazrul Islam, from the party after an internal investigation found him guilty of what it described as a “moral lapse.”
The decision was taken at an emergency meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council held at 4pm on Wednesday at the official residence of the opposition leader on Minto Road in the capital.
The meeting was chaired by Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman, MP, and attended by members of the party’s Central Executive Council.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Jamaat said an organisational investigation into issues surrounding Gazi Nazrul Islam that had been reported in various media outlets had established his “moral lapse.”
Based on the findings, the party decided to expel him from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in accordance with Article 62 of its constitution.
The party also decided to immediately notify the Bangladesh Election Commission of his expulsion.
The statement was signed by Ehsanul Mahbub Zubair, Jamaat’s assistant secretary general and secretary of its central publicity and media department.
The move comes days after Jamaat announced that it was examining media reports and other information concerning allegations involving Gazi Nazrul Islam, saying organisational action would be taken after verifying the facts.
