Explosion at NCP rally in Savar leaves 3 injured

At least three people were injured after a cocktail exploded at the venue of the National Citizen Party's (NCP) post-rally gathering in Savar following its march on Monday night.

Arifur Rahman Tuhin, joint chief coordinator of NCP, confirmed the matter.

"Savar NCP's July march came under the cocktail attack, leaving at least three people injured. They have been taken to Enam Medical College Hospital for treatment. Their identities could not be confirmed immediately," he said.

In an immediate response, NCP leaders and activists, led by party Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, brought out a protest procession condemning the attack.

The explosion occurred at around 9:45 pm at the Eidgah Ground near Savar Thana Stand, where the party was holding its rally following a march.

Speaking to Dhaka Tribune, NCP central member Yassir Arafat said the blast took place while Dhaka District NCP Convener Engineer Nabila Tasnid was addressing the gathering.

According to him, NCP Convener and Opposition Chief Whip Nahid Islam, Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, MP, and Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam, along with other central leaders, were on the stage at the time of the explosion.

NCP launched its "July March" on Monday as part of a month-long programme marking the second anniversary of the July Movement.

The march began in the Kaliganj Sramik College area of Gazipur in the afternoon. After concluding the programme there, Nahid Islam travelled to Savar.

Special guests at the event included Tarikul Islam, president of Jatiya Juboshakti, and its organising secretary Rifat Rashid.

Ali Naser Khan, NCP central joint chief organiser, among other party leaders, was also present.
