Awami League General Secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has said that national elections will be held by the first week of next year and a newly elected government will take charge by mid January.
Until responsibilities are handed over to an elected government, Sheikh Hasina will be the Prime Minister according to the constitution, he added while speaking to the media Sunday night.
On the other hand, it depended on the main opposition party whether Awami League will hold talks with them, Ashraf said while referring to BNP’s Monday press briefing.
The comments came after top brass of Awami League and Jatiya Party held over an hour long meeting at the Ganabhaban Sunday night.
This effectively means, Sheikh Hasina will head the cabinet that will be formed inclusive of all party members as proposed during her address to the nation.
Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina and Jatiya Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad were present in the Ganabhaban meeting that discussed details into the proposal of an all-party cabinet.
The meeting was said to have been held upon request of Sheikh Hasina.
Speaking to the media, Ashraf said Jatiya Party would participate at the next general elections under the banner of Awami League-led Grand Alliance.
On Saturday, Jatiya Party issued an official statement saying the prime minister’s all-party cabinet proposal lacked clarity.
