Jamaat ameer: All US agreements should be viewed in light of reality

Opposition leader and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said Bangladesh has not only one but multiple unequal agreements with the United States, adding that all such agreements should be assessed in light of present realities.

“We are in favor of viewing all agreements in the light of reality,” he said on Saturday while speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after returning from a visit to Japan.

Responding to a journalist’s question on rising commodity prices, Shafiqur said he intended to personally inspect different levels of the supply chain.

“I am actually a person who takes action after seeing reality. As soon as I landed here at the airport, I decided that, if possible, I will go today, otherwise tomorrow. I will go to the wholesale market. I will go to the retail market,” he said.

He added that he would also visit production sites, even if they were far away.

“I will go to where the goods come from… even if it is 200 miles away, I will go there as well. What is the price at the production site; what is it at the wholesale market after it comes here; then what is it at the retail market—after verifying these three things, we will take our position, Insha’Allah. We will not remain silent,” he said.

The Jamaat ameer also said Japan had shown significant interest in Bangladesh during his visit.

“We have noticed one thing—that Japan thinks a lot about Bangladesh. They said the current parliament seems somewhat different from past traditional parliaments. You are protesting on one side and also cooperating on the other side. If you love your country in this way, then we will also increase our love for you,” he said, describing it as a strong message for the country and its people.
