NCP condemns Kushtia shrine attack, alleges govt failure to curb mob violence

The National Citizen Party (NCP) has condemned the attack on a shrine in Daulatpur, Kushtia, and the killing of Pir Shamim Reza Jahangir, demanding immediate arrest and punishment of those involved.

In a statement issued on Saturday night, the party described mob violence as a serious criminal offence and alleged that the government has failed to prevent such incidents.

The NCP said that allegations of blasphemy or other sensitive matters should be investigated and tried through proper legal channels.

“Those who carried out arson and killing through mob violence have committed grave criminal offences. Law enforcement agencies must immediately identify the instigators, planners and perpetrators and bring them under the law,” the statement said.

The party also claimed that such incidents are often carried out with the backing of local influence, citing a similar attack on a shrine in Rajbari last year.

Referring to reports that a video allegedly showing the deceased making derogatory remarks about the Quran went viral on social media prior to the attack, the NCP said law enforcement agencies failed to take preventive measures despite past experience of similar incidents.

The statement further alleged that, despite repeated assurances by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed to curb “mob culture,” the government has not been able to control such activities.

It also accused the government of allowing politically aligned groups to engage in mob actions while using the term “mob culture” to suppress dissent.

The NCP said the overall law and order situation in the country is deteriorating and urged the government to take effective steps to restore stability instead of issuing statements.

The party also alleged that the government is failing to uphold commitments outlined in its election manifesto.
