Fakhrul: BNP govt implementing election promises made to farmers

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the party is implementing the election promises made to farmers “within a short time” under the leadership of Tarique Rahman.

Speaking at the inauguration of a canal excavation program on the Neha River at Bhaularhat in Raipur Union under Sadar Upazila, Fakhrul said BNP gives the highest importance to farmers’ issues.

He said the party’s current initiatives continue the legacy of late President Ziaur Rahman, who, he noted, initiated a “green revolution” in the country through canal excavation programs. He added that the ongoing canal-digging initiative is being carried forward by Tarique Rahman.

Fakhrul said the party has already begun distributing family cards and waived agricultural loans of up to Tk10,000. He also recalled that during the tenure of late former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, initiatives such as waiving agricultural loans up to Tk5,000 and exempting land revenue for up to 25 bighas of farmland were undertaken for farmers’ welfare.

“The water problem of farmers is now being addressed through natural solutions like canal excavation,” he said.

He also urged the administration to ensure transparency in implementing the program, saying, “For the sake of Allah, do not resort to any corruption in carrying out this work.”

State Minister for Water Resources Farhad Hossain Azad, Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Ishrat Farzana and other local dignitaries were present at the event organized by the Thakurgaon Water Development Board.
