Rangpur-4 MP and NCP leader Akhtar Hossain has demanded that convicted individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, be brought back to the country to ensure enforcement of their sentences in cases related to crimes against humanity.
He made the remarks on Thursday while speaking to journalists at the premises of the International Crimes Tribunal.
Akhtar Hossain said that so far, verdicts have been delivered in three cases at International Crimes Tribunal-1 and 2, but none of the sentences has yet been implemented. Among those convicted in one of the cases are former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
“Therefore, all convicted individuals who are currently absconding abroad must be brought back to the country to ensure execution of their sentences. This responsibility lies with the BNP government. They must take the necessary steps,” he said.
He further stated, “I am a witness in two tribunal cases and will provide testimony. I came here today to find out when the hearings for witness statements will begin. At the same time, I have observed the progress of the tribunal’s proceedings.”
Addressing the BNP-led government, the NCP leader urged them to ensure that the sentences of all convicted individuals are carried out. He also called for the arrest of all fugitives accused in crimes against humanity cases and for them to be brought under the law. “We hope that the pace of the tribunal’s proceedings will not be slowed,” he added.
