A protest rally organized by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its 11-party electoral alliance was held on Monday against alleged post-election violence, including allegations of repression, assault, killings, and rape.
The rally began at 4:30pm at the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque. Abdus Sattar Sumon, assistant publicity secretary of Dhaka South Jamaat, said the gathering was called to protest violence and persecution following the February 12 election.
After the rally, a procession marched from the mosque’s north gate to Shahbagh.
Ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis Mamunul Haque, and National Citizen Party (NCP) chief organizer Nasiruddin Patwary and other senior alliance leaders were present at the rally.
Leaders of Dhaka North and South Jamaat addressed the rally. Also present were Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar; newly elected Dhaka-12 MP and central executive council member Saiful Alam Khan Milon; Dhaka South Jamaat Ameer and Chapainawabganj-3 MP Nurul Islam Bulbul; South General Secretary and Patuakhali-3 MP Dr Shafiqul Islam Masud; Dhaka North Ameer Selim Uddin; North General Secretary Dr Rezaul Karim; Major (retd) Aktaruzzaman; and Bangladesh Labour Party Chairman Dr Mostafizur Rahman Iran.
In the 13th National Parliamentary Election and referendum held on February 12, voting took place in 299 constituencies, with results announced for 297. The Jamaat-led alliance secured 77 seats, with Jamaat winning 68, the NCP six, Khelafat Majlis one, and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis two.
