BNP discusses forming ‘national government’ with allies

The Standing Committee members of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Friday congratulated party Chairman Tarique Rahman after the party secured a single majority in the election.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and other senior leaders greeted Tarique Rahman with flowers at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Friday evening.

Following the meeting, BNP Standing Committee member and newly elected Member of Parliament from Chattogram-11, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, told reporters that discussions were held on implementing the party’s 31-point program and forming a national government in coordination with allies who were partners in the simultaneous movement with BNP.

Speaking to journalists after emerging from the Gulshan office, Amir Khasru said the people of Bangladesh had repeatedly placed their trust in the BNP during critical moments in the country’s history.

“In every difficult time and at every critical juncture, the people of Bangladesh have relied on the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. This time, too, they have once again placed their trust in the BNP and its leadership,” he said.

He added that the party was not claiming victory but emphasizing that it had earned the trust of the people.

“We are not saying that we have won. We are saying that we have earned the trust of the people of Bangladesh. That trust must be upheld. This is a very big responsibility,” he said.

Asked about the BNP’s approach toward the opposition in parliament, Amir Khasru said democracy would be strengthened through political decorum.

“The more political activities are conducted with decorum, the stronger democracy becomes. The political and constitutional democratic rights of the people of Bangladesh require political decorum, whether inside parliament or outside,” he said.

Responding to a question about the party’s future relations with neighboring and other countries, he said the BNP does not pursue a foreign policy centered on any specific country.

“Our foreign policy is for Bangladesh and its people, and it is based on relations with all countries. It is not centered on any particular country,” he said.
