Jamaat candidate installs CCTV camera next to polling station, raising concerns
Md Saif Ullah, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami candidate for Noakhali-1 (covering parts of Chatkhil and Sonaimuri), has installed a CCTV camera on his campaign banner following repeated incidents of theft and vandalism.
The camera was placed on the upper part of a banner mounted on two poles beside Amirabad High School in Ward No 4 of Devati Union under Sonaimuri upazila.
Supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami alleged that the party’s campaign banners had been repeatedly stolen in the area, prompting them to take additional security measures. Despite notifying the authorities, the issue remained unresolved, leading the party to install new banners equipped with CCTV cameras for continuous monitoring.
Saif Ullah said: “We have filed multiple complaints with the authorities regarding the theft and vandalism of our banners, but the incidents have not stopped. That is why we were compelled to install CCTV cameras on the banners.”
Assistant Returning Officer and Sonaimuri Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Nasrin Akter said she had taken immediate action over reported violations, including the vandalism of election banners.
She, however, added that she was not aware of the CCTV cameras installed in front of the Amirabad polling center.
