BNP condemns Jamaat ameer's remarks on women

Dr Mahdi Amin, adviser to the BNP chairman and spokesperson of the Election Management Committee, said that if the post regarding women on the Jamaat ameer's Twitter account is true, it would be deeply disappointing for the nation. He added that such indecent remarks reflect medieval barbarism.

He made these remarks at a press conference on Thursday at the BNP Election Management Committee office in Gulshan, Dhaka.

Dr Mahdi Amin said that claiming the post was false nine hours later is irrelevant. An explanation should have been issued immediately after the account was reportedly hacked. In fact, in response to public outrage across the country, the party filed a General Diary (GD) at Hatirjheel Police Station around 3am.

Moreover, the Jamaat Amir’s recent comments on women’s empowerment on Al Jazeera are also alarming.

He emphasized that the BNP has always been tolerant towards women. The recent vitriolic behavior of Jamaat’s top leaders towards women, he said, reflects their mindset.

Mahadi alleged that a few days ago, a Jamaat leader made obscene remarks about female students of Dhaka University. Jamaat has not nominated women for the current election, and even their party chief has acknowledged that women cannot hold the top position in their party. Yet, their women go door-to-door seeking votes.

The BNP chairman’s adviser added that Jamaat’s “bot army” harasses their women both online and offline and engages in cyberbullying against student party activists.

He highlighted that women contribute significantly to the national economy, whether as teachers in schools, colleges, and universities, or as garment workers, and stated that Jamaat’s attitude towards these women is unacceptable.

Dr Mahdi Amin also recalled the heroic role of women during the Liberation War of 1971 and the July uprising.
