Speaker apprises JS of SQC’s punishment

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury on Sunday apprised parliament of the conviction of BNP lawmaker Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for committing crimes against humanity during Bangladesh’s 1971 Liberation War.

AKM Nasiruddin, the registrar of the International Crimes Tribunal that handed down the death penalty to Salauddin Quader, sent a letter to the Speaker informing her about the ruling against the BNP lawmaker.

According to parliament’s rules of procedure, the Speaker read out the registrar’s letter in the house on Sunday.

Shirin, however, did not make it clear whether Salauddin Quader would lose his membership following his conviction.

The Rules of Procedure of the Jatiya Sansgad obligates the relevant authorities to inform the Speaker about the conviction or arrest of any member of parliament. Furthermore, the Speaker must share the information with the MPs.
