AL candidate Rimon wins Barguna 2 by-polls

Ruling Awami League candidate Shawkat Hasanur Rahman Rimon was unofficially declared the winner of the by-polls for the Barguna 2 constituency held on Thursday, reports UNB.

Returning officer Mostafa Faruk announced the results of the by-election at the deputy commissioner’s office at 10pm in the presence of the participating candidates, their supporters and journalists.

As per the results announced, Rimon bagged 65,813 votes while his nearest candidate Golam Sarwar Hiru of Islami Andolon Bangladesh secured 57,993 votes.

Election officials said the voter turn-out was 54% in the election.

Earlier, the voting started at 8am amid tight security and continued until 4pm without any break at 96 polling stations with 528 booths.

Many law enforcers, including police, Rab and Ansar, were on security duty at each polling station.

There were also members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and 19 mobile courts to maintain law and order.

The by-election was held with the updated electoral rolls of the constituency at the end of the current parliament, which is supposed to be dissolved on or after October 24 as per the Constitution.

The parliamentary seat, comprising Patharghata, Bamna and Betagi upazilas, fell vacant following the death of ruling Awami League MP Golam Sabur Tulu who was killed in a road accident in Faridpur on July 26.

There was a legal obligation for the Election Commission to hold the by-election by October 23 as the article 123 (4) of the Constitution states, ”Election to a seat of the Parliament, upon its falling vacant for a specific reason, must be held within ninety days of the occurrence of the vacancy.”
