ACC quizzes former state minister Alamgir Kabir

The Anti-Corruption Commission on Wednesday quizzed former state minister for housing and public works, Alamgir Kabir on charge of his alleged involvement in incurring the government a loss of Tk390m while in office, an ACC official said.

Commission’s Assistant Director, Jatan Kumar Roy quizzed Alamgir Kabir on Wednesday at the commission’s headquarters for his involvement in alleged illegal allocation of plots to a cooperative organisation, he said.

The official said with the consent of the former state minister, the ministry officials in August 2006 allocated seven acres of land to an association named Dhaka Journalist’s Cooperative Society at a much lower rate than the prevailing market price.

By misusing his power, the minister allocated the land, which caused a loss of over Tk390m for the government, the official said quoting documents on the allegation. The commission was scheduled to quiz Alamgir on September 29, but the former state minister avoided grilling claiming to be ill, and requested ACC to reschedule the interview on October 2.

On September 23, the commission quizzed the then president of Dhaka Journalist Cooperative Society Mojammel Haque and Secretary MA Aziz with regard to the scam.
