Chhatra League locks 5 buildings at Dhaka University

Leaders and activists of the banned student organization Bangladesh Chhatra League have padlocked the main gates of five buildings at Dhaka University (DU) as part of their pre-announced "Dhaka Lockdown" program.

Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune and said action is being taken in response.

The incident occurred late Tuesday night, when locks were placed on five academic buildings including the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Institute of Education and Research.

Sharing some photos related to the incident on Facebook, Mazharul Kabir Shoyon, president of the Dhaka University unit of Chhatra League, wrote: "Make the lockdown successful all day on the 13th. BSL Lockdown - Faculty of Fine Arts, IER, Institute of Nutrition and Food Science, Curzon Hall Gate, Science Building, Dhaka University."

Dhaka University Proctor Saifuddin Ahmed told Dhaka Tribune that the Proctorial Mobile Team broke all the locks they found last night. At the same time, a decision has been made to dismiss the Estate Office staff who were on duty at those gates.

"We are reviewing CCTV camera footage to identify those involved," he said.

When asked whether additional security measures will be taken on Thursday in response to Chhatra League's Dhaka Lockdown program, he said: "We will definitely be more vigilant than our usual measures. And we will ensure that everyone remains alert."
