Supporters of a prospective Awami League candidate allegedly launched an attack on a programme of another AL nomination aspirant on Saturday night, leaving 15 people injured.
Eye-witnesses said followers of Fulgazi upazila unit Awami League President Ekramul Haque Ekram allegedly carried out vandalism torched vehicles during a programme of National Life Insurance at Rajeshpur Bazar area under Parshuram upazila.
Ekram’s rival Mostafizur Rahman Dulal, who is seeking AL candidacy from Feni 1 constituency, is the director of the insurance company.
The injured were rushed to Porshuram Health Complex and Feni Sadar Hospital.
The attackers set fire to three vehicles and vandalised two others that belonged to the insurance company, locals said. Mostafiz filed a lawsuit with the Parshuram police station on Sunday morning in this connection.
When contacted, Ekramul Haque denied his involvement in the attack. He, however, said the party activists became furious as local Awami League leaders were not invited at the programme.
Officer-in-Charge of Porshuram police station Ali Arshad confirmed the incident, and said they detained one person for his suspected involvement in the attack.
“The police have visited the spot and the situation is now calm in the area,” he added.
