Taher: Time has not yet come to say July uprising has failed

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Nayeb-e-Ameer Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher on Tuesday said that some people are expressing doubts about the success of the July uprising due to the lack of visible reform and justice, but the time has not yet come to say that the movement has failed.

"... in our view, it was a great achievement—the farewell to a despotic government and the liberation of the people—and the time has not yet come to say that July uprising has failed," Taher said at a prayer event organized by the Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka south unit in remembrance of the martyrs and the injured of the July uprising.

He said the uprising created a unity in which parties with different ideals came together on one platform.

The people are now much more aware, and although the despotic mentality has not yet ended, that force will be decisively defeated through the people’s vote, Taher added.

He emphasized that Jamaat will not participate in any election without reform, saying: “The upcoming election must be free and fair; otherwise, Bangladesh will face a difficult situation. We believe that, in such a situation, if necessary, the people of this country will be ready to fight again. The Jamaat-e-Islami will not accept any election without reforms.”
