A Jamaat-e-Islami activist was reportedly shot and killed while 15 others, including 5 policemen, were injured in a clash between police and hartal supporters at Gaurinagar village in Mujibnagar upazila on Thursday, the second day of 48-hour countrywide shutdown.
The identity of the Jamaat activist could not be known immediately.
Locals said Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a pro-hartal procession around 8am. At one stage, they threw brick chips at the law enforcers as police tried to foil their procession.
Later, police fired shots as the activists of the Islamist party turned violent, leaving the Jamaat man dead on the spot and 15 others injured.
While contacted, Meherpur sadar police station OC Reazul Islam said: “One among the injured police men, sustained serious injuries.”
However, he could not confirm the death.
