Supporters of Jamaat-e-Islami vandalised four vehicles in Kaliganj early today as part of a movement to protest the death penalty for Jamaat leader Abdul Quader Molla given by the Supreme Court yesterday.
Jamaat called the two-day nationwide strike, which started at 6pm today, protesting the verdict and decrying a “government conspiracy” to kill its leaders.
The Appellate Division of Supreme Court sentenced the senior Jamaat leader to death for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 war of independence – more than seven months after he was handed down life-term by the war crimes tribunal.
According to sources at the Kaliganj police station, besides damaging the four vehicles including a Sonali Paribahan bus, Jamaat activists also demonstrated near the Patibila Bridge on the Kaliganj-Jibannagar highway.
They also threw stones and brickbats at police and roadside structures and vehicles.
