EC to prepare list of office-of-profits

The Election Commission (EC) will publish a list of office-of-profits before it announces the schedule for the next general election to determine who can contest the polls.

Election Commissioner Md Shah Newaz spoke with reporters Thursday at his office in the capital.

Once the list is published, those named will be prohibited from vying for election.

The EC is yet to decide if district election officers or deputy commissioners will work as returning officers in the upcoming national elections.

The EC will take the decision before announcing the poll schedule for the next general elections, Newaz said.

“Deputy commissioners were made returning officers in the last parliamentary elections. We will take a final decision on this matter at the full commission meeting.”

Regarding the provision of training to over 600,000 election officials for the parliamentary elections, the commissioner said after the completion of their training they would then train field level officials.

When asked about the partiality of field level officials during the upcoming elections, the commissioner said the commission would send the list of election officials to field level officials before the elections.

If anyone opposes the appointment of an election official, the EC will take action against them, he added.

The election commissioner also said in the next week the commission would hold a meeting regarding the observer policy for the elections.

As for the preparation of the electoral code of conduct, Newaz said it had already been prepared and, if required, the electoral code would be changed to ensure a free, fair and neutral election, he added.

Donor agencies will send the necessary equipment for the parliamentary elections and transparent ballot boxes will arrive in due time, the commissioner said.

The commission has also requested that donor agencies provide chargeable lights for proper casting and counting of votes at polling centres with no electricity connection.
