BNP Vice Chairman Advocate Zainul Abedin has said the judiciary could not function independently under the previous fascist government but assured everyone that if the BNP wins the upcoming election and comes to power, judges will not face any pressure.
He made these remarks as the chief guest at an iftar, prayer gathering, and discussion organized by the Dhaka Bar Association on Monday.
Zainul urged the government to complete reforms and hold elections soon, stating that Bangladesh is waiting for the return of the Zia family.
He expressed anticipation for Khaleda Zia’s return and Tarique Rahman’s leadership in the country.
As the keynote speaker, BNP’s Legal Affairs Secretary Barrister Kaiser Kamal emphasized that the judiciary plays a vital role in governance.
He said that strong judicial systems ensure strong democracies. Criticizing past trials under the current government, he alleged that Tarique Rahman’s case was judged by candlelight, calling it a mockery of justice.
He said that they do not want trials to be held at night instead of during the day.
Kaiser Kamal further said that the judiciary should not only stand upright but also be strong.
He emphasized that true justice will prevail only when the judiciary operates independently and impartially. He added that they want a free, sovereign, and neutral judiciary.
