BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has emphasized the importance of ensuring women’s safety as a fundamental determinant of a modern state.
"Ensuring women’s safety is the most important factor in determining a modern state. Let us say no to all acts of extremism, hatred and disrespect towards women. We urge the interim government to consolidate law and order," he said in a post on his verified Facebook page on Friday, on the eve of International Women’s Day.
He mentioned that over 15 years, thousands of men and women fell victim to enforced disappearances, killings and torture, adding that the women in those families endured inhuman struggles during this period.
The movement was initiated in July by the women of Bangladesh, he said: "People of all faiths—Hindus, Muslims, Christians and Buddhists—joined the movement."
"We aim to build a Bangladesh where the primary objective of law enforcement agencies is to ensure the security of its citizens. We envision a Bangladesh where every citizen, regardless of gender, age or profession, feels safe walking on the streets. Their self-respect should be valued everywhere—from home to the streets, universities and workplaces," he said.
He also said there is no place for extremism in today’s fascism-free Bangladesh.
Highlighting the significance of International Women’s Day, to be observed on Saturday, he concluded: "Women are partners in our development and progress. On the eve of International Women’s Day, let us take action to accelerate our advancement."
