Khasru: People’s mandate needed to implement second republic

BNP Standing Committee Member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Monday that the people’s mandate is required to implement a so-called "second republic."

Khasru made the comment while speaking to reporters after paying homage to the grave of the BNP founder, late president Ziaur Rahman, along with members of the newly elected committee of the Tax Lawyers Forum in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.

“To implement any idea of the newly formed political party, it must face the people. They have to come to power with the mandate of the people, and it must be passed in parliament. Only then will it be possible to realize their demands,” he said.

The senior BNP leader warned that ongoing crises would worsen if a democratic government is not established.

“Law and order in the country is deteriorating. Until a democratic government is formed, the country will remain backward,” he said.

Urging the interim government to announce an election roadmap soon, Khasru added: “A sense of expectation has been created among the people regarding the elections. The ongoing crises will deepen if the election process is delayed. If the government is sincere, it is possible to hold the national election in June instead of December.”
