Roads, rail blockade, if needed says Fakhrul

The main opposition BNP Thursday warned of blockades on roads and rail lines to force the government into recognising their demands for the upcoming general elections to be held under a non-partisan interim government.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, acting secretary general of BNP said: “I want to ask the government for the last time, there is still time in your hand.Bring a bill on non-partisan interim government in the upcoming parliamentary session, otherwise, we would not have any other option other than waging a movement, and you will not get any time to escape.”

Fakhrul was addressing a Jubo Dal rally at Suhrawardy Uddyan when he said: “The government will make a mistake if it treats BNP’s liberalism and patience as its weak points. If the government’s good sense does not prevail, street and railway will be blockaded. Resistance should be launched from all corners.”

Fakhrul asked party leaders and activists to embark on a tough resistance programme to foil the government’s plans.

He said he had hoped the government would respect people’s expectations, which he said are only being frustrated. “We hoped that the government would take the initiative to hold dialogue and resolve the prevailing crisis but the government hasn’t done so,” he added.

Earlier, at another programme held at the National Press Club, Fakhrul said the constitution is not a holy book that it cannot be amended.

“Once Awami League waged a movement for a caretaker government and even published a booklet for it, but now they themselves have annulled the caretaker system and ignored people’s demands,” he said.

The BNP spokesperson criticised Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and said: “When the Prime Minister was in the opposition, she danced to civil society’s tunes, but now she cannot tolerate their advice.”
