BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Sunday alleged that the Awami League had looted banks prior to August 5, and subsequently, an Islamist group took over their control.
Speaking to reporters after placing a wreath at the grave of late President Ziaur Rahman on behalf of the Jatiyatabadi Rickshaw-Van-Auto Sramik Dal, Rizvi said: “Before August 5, the Awami League plundered the banks, and after that, an Islamic group took control.”
He further said: “Many, posing as successors to S Alam who looted during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, have taken over these banks. They attempt to tarnish BNP’s image by making baseless claims. This group has seized control of terminals, tenders, and other means of exploitation in the localities.”
Referring to alleged financial embezzlement, Rizvi said: “After August 5, the public witnessed the corruption of a political group. Those involved in acts like cutting the leg veins and spreading anarchy are well-known. Jamaat, which stood against the 1971 Liberation War, is trying to exploit the situation for its benefit.”
Rizvi emphasized BNP’s principles and commitment to democracy: “BNP has never retreated from its pledge to the people. From 1971 till August 5, BNP stood firm on its democratic values.”
He criticized misinformation campaigns allegedly run by neighbouring countries and political parties: “Not just outsiders, but two political groups within the country aim to fish in troubled waters.”
Rizvi accused Jamaat of trying to reconcile with Sheikh Hasina to strengthen ties with India.
Highlighting the sacrifices made for the party’s movements, Rizvi said: “The July revolution is the culmination of 16 years of relentless struggle. Ninety-seven workers were martyred in this effort.”
He added that their contributions continue to inspire the nation.
