BNP Standing Committee Member Abdul Moyeen Khan has said the Liberation War of 1971 and the 2024 student-led uprising are not at odds with each other; instead, they serve as complementary movements.
Viewing these events from this perspective could help avoid conflict, the politician said on Tuesday during a seminar on constitutional reform, hosted by Nagarik Oikya at the Nasrul Hamid Auditorium of the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU).
“More than 50 years after independence, we must understand that Bangladesh cannot progress through conflict-driven politics,” he said.
"The constitution is meant to serve the people, not the other way around,” he said. “If we genuinely believe this, then rewriting or amending the constitution should not be seen as a point of conflict. Our focus must be on the people, not solely the constitution. Whatever actions are required for the welfare of the people, we should take—even if it means rewriting or amending the constitution.”
He added that the goal is to establish a state system that benefits the people and ultimately create a welfare state.
"Our methods should not be a barrier if our intentions are honest and genuinely aim to serve the people’s welfare,” Moyeen said.
