The death of Jubo League leader Jahid Siddiqui Tarek in a Rab "crossfire" was a "drama," ruling party Awami League's Advisory Council Member Suranjit Sengupta has said.
Suranjit, also a minister without portfolio, came down hard on the elite crime busters, while addressing a discussion at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Thursday.
"Such incidents before the national elections will encourage the anti-election campaigners. It will also inspire the anti-Awami League forces," he said.
"Rab again staged a drama Thursday and two more people lost their lives," Suranjit said, adding that the country must see an end to such incidents.
Tarek, along with one of his associates, was killed in what Rapid Action Battalion claimed was a gunfight late Wednesday night in the capital's Khilkhet area.
He was the prime accused in the case filed in connection with the murder of another Jubo League leader Reazul Haque Milky, who was shot by criminals a day before, in front of a shopping mall in the capital's Gulshan area.
Tarek, who sustained bullet wounds during Tuesday's incident, was being treated in a private hospital in Uttara.Â
Rab claimed that Tarek tried to escape when they were taking him to the Gulshan police station.
Suranjit also termed the murder of Milky as an instance of "mental disorder" on the part of the killer.Â
On the issue of the Election Commission planning to strip itself of the power to scrap election candidature if anyone breached electoral codes of conduct, the minister without portfolio said the ruling party had "no headache" regarding this.
He said the politicians would rather have to act more responsibly to make the democratic process in the country stronger.Â
The senior Awami League leader called upon main opposition party BNP to stop critising the EC for the sake of strong democracy.
