Awami League activists foil attempts to attack party offices in Dhaka

The Awami League’s central office on Bangabandhu Avenue and the party president’s office in Dhanmondi faced attack attempts on Sunday amid a non-cooperation movement, but party leaders and activists successfully repelled them.

Jubo League Publicity Secretary Joydeb Nandi, who was at the Bangabandhu Avenue office in Gulistan, told Dhaka Tribune that at least three attempts had been made to attack the office.

"On their way to Shahbagh and TSC (DU), Jamaat and Shibir cadres attempted several attacks on the central party office, but our hundreds of leaders and activists thwarted their plans," said Joydeb.

A similar scenario unfolded at the Awami League office in Dhanmondi. From the morning, Awami League and its affiliated organizations took positions near the party president’s political office on Dhanmondi 3/A.

Khairul Majid Bhuiyan Kabir, president of the Awami League’s Ward 15 unit, under Dhanmondi thana, said Awami League and its affiliated organizations were prepared to defend “our leaders’ office with our lives."

"The first attack occurred around noon. They attacked with a large number of weapons, bombs and cocktails. It felt like they were trained goons."
