BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the life of the party Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who was suddenly admitted to Evercare Hospital in the morning, is now at risk.
“She (Khaleda) suddenly fell ill in the early morning. We have been repeatedly saying she has been suffering from many critical ailments,” he said.
Fakhrul bemoaned that the government is not giving importance to the issue of Khaleda’s illness and her treatment abroad.
“Her life is now in danger. We think they (govt) are doing it (not allowing Khaleda to go abroad for treatment) intentionally,” he said.
Fakhrul made the remarks while talking to reporters at the BNP chairperson's Gulshan office after visiting Khaleda at Evercare Hospital in the afternoon.
He said Khaleda’s unconditional release has become a national demand. “She should be released unconditionally. She has been subjected to serious injustice. She has been pushed towards death by keeping her confined in a motivated way out of political vendetta.”
The BNP leader voiced concern that Khaleda has to come to the hospital frequently after falling ill suddenly, as her diseases are getting gradually complicated.
He said they have long been saying repeatedly that their ailing party chief needs to be treated in a multi-disciplinary treatment centre abroad. “But it is unfortunate that they (govt) are not releasing Begum Khaleda Zia (without conditions) out of political vengeance.”
Meanwhile, Khaleda was admitted to Evercare Hospital in the capital again early Monday.
Khaleda Zia was receiving treatment in a cabin equipped with CCU facilities under the close supervision of her medical board, Shairul Kabir Khan from the BNP's media cell said in the afternoon quoting Dr Zahid.
The party's media cell reported that senior leaders, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, had visited Khaleda Zia at the hospital.
The latest hospitalization comes less than a week after her return home from the same hospital following 10 days of treatment there.
The BNP chief went to her Gulshan residence on July 2 evening.
A pacemaker was implanted in her heart at the hospital on June 23 after she was taken there in the afternoon the previous day.
On October 27 last year, Khaleda Zia, who suffers from liver cirrhosis, was operated on by three doctors from the United States.
The 79-year-old politician suffers from various other complex diseases including diabetes and arthritis.
