Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has urged ruling party activists to be careful about rumours, as a vested quarter is trying to spread propaganda to label the Awami League a corrupt party.
He said this yesterday afternoon while addressing a rally in Dhaka to mark the Awami League’s 75th founding anniversary.
Urging party men to remain alert against rumours, he said: “Remain alert and be careful. BNP is spreading rumours against the Awami League….they (BNP) are plotting to show the Awami League as a corrupt party by spreading rumours. They are attacking the police and have the same intention against the army. They are spreading rumours to label Awami League as a corrupt party.”
Quader also blamed some media outlets for spreading rumours and said such outlets are involved in anti-Awami League propaganda.
“There is a conspiracy to portray Awami League as a corrupt party. Some of the media have indulged in that propaganda. But Awami League is built on the people's power, under Sheikh Hasina's leadership. Awami League is not a party to bow down,” said Quader.
The minister further said: “The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the judiciary are independent, and if an individual commits offences, he or she will be brought to justice. Sheikh Hasina dares to bring offenders to justice.”
“Awami League is not a drop of dew on leaves that will topple down anytime. I want to say clearly that the source of our power is the people of Bangladesh. So Awami League will not fall just by tapping,” the Road, Transports and Bridge minister also said.
Yesterday afternoon, the Awami League held a colourful procession. Thousands of ruling party activists from various areas of Dhaka attended the rally with banners and festoons.
Before the rally, Awami League leaders addressed the crowd from a temporary stage set up on the premises of the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) adjacent to Suhrawardy Udyan.
June 23 is the 75th anniversary of Bangladesh Awami League, the country's oldest and largest political organization. The rally was part of the Awami League’s platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Awami League central leaders, including Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury, Jahangir Kabir Nanok, Mahbubul Alam Hanif, and AFM Bahauddin Nasim, among others attended the rally.
