The Election Commission (EC) is yet to take any final decision on scrapping the article 91(E) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), which would revoke the EC’s authority to cancel the candidature of anyone contesting the national polls.
“We are still working on the RPO including 91(E) and have not taken any final decision in this regard yet. We have not send the draft RPO to the law ministry,” Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad told reporters after a meeting on organisational structure of the EC at the EC secretariat Wednesday.
On July 27, the EC decided to scrap 91(E) from the RPO, the article which states that if any allegation of breaching the electoral code of conduct arises against any candidate or his representatives or one of supporters by any sources and if the allegation in proven, the EC would cancel the candidacy of the candidate. The EC could also form investigation committee in this regard.
