The Awami League is set to finalize its candidates for the women’s reserved seats in the 12th National Parliament following interviews with nomination aspirants scheduled at Ganabhaban on Wednesday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will lead the meeting on the same day, where the party is expected to select candidates for the reserved women’s seats.
The announcement was made through a press release signed by Awami League Office Secretary Barrister Biplob Barua on Tuesday.
Nomination aspirants have been urged to attend the meeting on time and must present the slip portion of the form for entry to Ganabhaban.
The Awami League received an overwhelming response from women aspirants for the reserved seats in the 12th parliament, with a record 1,549 collecting nomination forms against 48 seats.
This translates to an average of 32 aspirants competing for each seat.
The nomination forms, each priced at Tk50,000, have contributed Tk7.74 crore to the party’s funds.
In comparison, during the 11th parliament elections, 1,510 female candidates collected nomination forms from the Awami League when the form’s price was Tk30,000.
The party is set to nominate candidates for 48 out of the 50 seats in the 12th parliament, as independent MPs have relinquished their 10 seats to the Awami League.
The sale and submission of nomination forms took place from Tuesday until Thursday, marking a significant step in shaping the representation of women in Bangladesh’s parliamentary affairs.
